Will do

Hello,

I have seen the expression "will do" used in informal emails and I was wondering if it is correct. Should we said instead "I will do so" or is it too formal.

Thanks,

You're right Scarlett .. "will do" is used commonly in informal emails/chats/conversations but does in fact mean "I will do so". It is also commonly used amongst co-workers.

  • "Will do" is absolutely fine to use in those contexts.
  • "I will do so" definitely has a formal tone.

Thanks, I have also seen "noted" used instead of "will do", which I assume is another informal way to acknowledge receipt of an email, correct?

Well the two are different. "Will do" usually indicates that you will carry out some action "I will do that/so". "Noted" indicates that you have taken a record (mental or written record) of what the person has said ("I have noted what you said") but there is no necessary implication that you will do anything more with that information. e.g:

Email from manager to HR department:
