Widely used

Is it correct to understand widely used as traded? or used here has it regular meaning? sorry sometimes it doesn't make sense to me and I try to understand.. thanks.

There were many banks and each of them could print their own bank notes, but only banks with good repute were the most respected. Their banknotes were widely used by the market.
