Why would <-- the usage of would

Hi,

I've been asking this quetion a couple times on here, but did not get the anwers that would make me understand. In this sentence, "Why would she set you up with a stripper?", I'm wondering why the modal 'would' was use and if it's a conditional (hypothetical?) question. Or is it just a past form of will? Thanks so much!

Hi I hope my answer will convince you... Would is used to imagine a situation that hasn't occured yet... " "She" still hasn't done the action "to set the stripper" but you imagine that she would.

Although it's a question, it may not be addressed to anyone but onesself.

Yes, it's a sort of hypothetical, because her motive is apparently unknown to either the questioner or the questioned.

If the questioner expected a "real" answer, he would say, "Why did

This is certainly possible, but I've been assuming that it has already happened,
which I believe is the natural assumption.

In my opinion, the act is real. Only the motive is unknown (to the questioner). He's not necessarily asking for the real motive. He would be

It is definitely hypothetical. The person who asks this is inviting the listener to speculate on the possible reasons for what "she" did or might do.

Thanks so much teachers!

Yes, setting him up with a stripper has already happened, and the questioner is asking about the motive. Anyway, it's not the past form of will, and it's a hypothetical. I got your explanations printed and I'm pondering ^^ Thanks!
