Why " will be getting dark"?

I have a question.

I got a sentence like this. " It will be getting dark before we reach home."
Can' t I say that " It is getting dark before we reach home." ?
These two sentences have similar meaning, don't they?
If " it is getting dark... " is not appropriate, could you explain the
reason?

Thank you in advance.

No to me. Because you point to the future while the verb "is" is a present tense verb.

Thank you for answering my question.
Still, let me rephase my question.
Present progressive form can be used as a future tense, can't it?

Not completely. It starts at the present time and continues to some time in the future. But future tense starts and ends both in the future.

The dependent clause "before we reach home" establishes the time frame for the sentence to be some future point of time.

Imagine that we will get home at 8 pm. "Before we get home" is before 8 pm.
You are talking about the daylight before 8 pm. What will that
