Why, whether and tenses

The moment I got home, my wife asked me ____ I had been to the hospital.

A. whether B. why

I feel both are correct, but one of my collegues said A is the answer and that if we choose B, we should change "had been to" to "went to". Is there any connection between why, whether and tenses?

You're right; your colleague is wrong. There is no connection with tenses. These are fine: The moment I got home, my wife asked me whether I had been to the hospital.
