Why where?

Hi. I have some questions and sentences below that have the word "where". I don't understand why the first one can have the preposition "from" before it when the idea I have is that the word "where" usually don't have a preposition before it.

1. Where are you from? I am from xxx.

2. Where have been? I have been to a store.

3. Where is it? It is three blocks east from here.

4. Where does it belong? It belongs to xxx.

Top answer

1. Where are you from? I am from ***.

  • 1.
  • Where are you from?
  • I am from ***.
  • 2.
  • Where have you been?

Thanks. Why are we not supposed to have a preposition at the end for sentences 2 and 3 like the first one (in question)? I think the patterns are very alike.

Where are you from? I am from ***.

Where is it at? It is at a market.

Where does he live in? He lives in xx.
