Why we use ' would have done' on the following example?

"That's a real old-fashioned way to deal with crime, isn't it ? it 's like what my parents would have done ! "

Why speaker used "would have done" in a way that 'would +pp ' means :a hypothetical situation in the past, which he/she knows did not happen.
