Why use "ing" form?

1.Hi, can anyone help explain why the "ing" form is used together with the verbs "kill" and "injure" in the following sentence?
What grammatical point is it to use "killing" and "injuring"? Can this sentence be re-written to "....., which killed at least three
people and injured eight others, ...." ?

A passenger ferry collided with a pleasure boat under 's iconic harbor bridge Wednesday night,
killing at least three
people and
injuring eight others, officials and witnesses said.

2. Is the below sentence the same grammatical point as Question 1 using the "ing" form" ?

The ferry plowed over the smaller boat, throwing its passengers into the water in the collision, which occurred about 10:45
