Why use "observable" to replace "impressive"?

In the last 10 years we have all witnessed an impressive growth in out knowledge about the environment.
B. observable
D. obvious
"observable" seems to mean "just enough to be noticed" while "obvious" can mean "great enough to be easily noticed". So I think D is the best answer. But the key is B. I don't understand why use "observable" to replace "impressive"? Could you please explain it. Thank you.

What are answers A and C? Both B and D seem possible to me, though neither is as effective as 'impressive'.
