Why things are mostly denoted with feminine...?

Why are things mostly denoted with feminine gender, especially in English? Almost every country is called motherland by its natives, I believe only Germans call their country fatherland. Is there any special reason?

In English, I think these things are really just idiomatic. We say it that way because we like to say it that way.
