Why the definite articles?

Hi. Please help. In John 15:1 of the Bible in the New International Version, it is stated as part of a quote:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

Now, I think this is what Jesus is saying to his disciples. Now, why is the definite article "the" before "vine" and "gardener"?
