Why ships are good

Often, when referring to ships, "good" is added to their designation, like "the good ship Mayflower" or "the good ship Vigilance". I always assumed that was some kind of classification method, and that the ships transported, you know, goods. But now I think that it's a term of endearment rather than anything else. So, since when have ships been called "good", and are there even certain rules that have to be considered here?

Considering that the Lollipop qualifies, I don't think the rules can be very strict.
