Why "save" in "God save the Queen"?

Could anyone please explain me why they say "God save the Queen", why don't they put a "s" to "save"? Thanks

It's in the subjunctive mood.

"*** save the Queen" really means "May *** save the Queen" (i.e. the expression of a fervent wish).

Required by the fact, as John points out, that we do not command *** to do anything.
