Why "Came crashing down" when we can use "crashed down"?

1. His hand came crashing down on the table.

2. His hand crashed down on the table.

What's the difference between 1 and 2? Which one is more natural? and can I always replace it with 2 where 1 is used? Thanks!

Similar, but I wouldn't say these are identical.

1. His hand came crashing down on the table. Sounds a little bit more literary. The progressive stresses the action, process, duration. I would also argue that it does not mean, in every case, that the action was completed.
