Why "are staying" but not "stay" ?

I can't say that I know English very bad but yesterday I decided to review all materails about English Grammar.
"They haven't got anywhere to live at the moment. They are staying with friends untill they find somewhere."
Why "are staying" but not "stay" ?

Are staying indicates what they are doing r ight now . Continuous aspect is the most common form for an event happening at the moment of speaking. Stay ( simple present) more commonly expresses a timeless condition-- something that happens now, in the past and in the future.
