I've just been watching a TV show and heard the following sentence:
That was the first time I'd felt guilty about my job.
I have no clue as to why the past perfect tense is used in that sentence.

"That is the first time I've felt guilty about my job"
Here is the structure:
It is the first/second/third, etc time (that) + present perfect simple
It was the first/second/third, etc time (that) + past perfect simple
