Why past perfect here?

Hi. Can you please tell me why the past perfect tense is used here?

From the Good News Bible (Today's English Version), Proverbs 23:32 :

The next morning you will feel as if you had been bitten by a poisonous snake.

As between past perfect and present perfect (as if you have been bitten) the use of "had" suggests that a greater amount of time has passed between the "feeling" and the supposed "biting."
