Hi, why do we need to use a past perfect tense in a situation like this (if we need to use it indeed)?
This book tells of a broken marriage. A rift had opened a decade or so ago over whether the wife placed good enough trust in their relationship. Now, both of them are not willing to fix the rift and live together.
