why not unless

because of the ways debts are applied, they hardly realise the true prices of items bought on credit. They may nat realise the danger of unpaid debt, either, ____ they've already done damage to their credit score.
In the sentence above, till is presented as the correct answer to complete the sentence.. And I wonder why not unless, which is among the alternatives... thanks
