Why "Ltd" is put after names of some companies not before?

Here is the definition of "Ltd" in Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary.

Ltd
Ltd adjective [after noun]
UK WRITTEN ABBREVIATION FOR limited liability company: used in the name of a company whose owners have limited responsibility for the money that it owes:
Smith and Jones Ltd

I am curious to know why the adjective is put after names of some companies not before.
e.g. "Beer Brewery Co., Ltd."
NOT Ltd Beer Brewery Co.
