Why "look someone in the eye, not in the eyes"

I understand "she looked me in the eye" is a set phrase, but I wonder why not "in the eyes." Can anyone explain?

Top answer

" Can anyone explain? It's not possible to explain the inexplicable. Set phrases are not always very logical.
