Why italicize and no article?

Hi, please tell me if an English article (like the definite article 'the"?) would be needed before the italicized name of the seminar and why italicizing would/might be correct.

This seminar eventually became Spring Study Seminar in the mid 1980s.

Thank you. Is italicizing a proper name just one way that people resort to show a name is a proper name. If I left it without italicizing it, would you find it odd or possibly incorrect?

Hi,
Is italicizing a proper name just one way that people resort to show a name is a proper name. Yes.

If I left it without italicizing it, would you find it odd or possibly incorrect? No.

There are various Style Guides that tell students and other writers how their institutions/organizations want them to handle such matters, for the sake of uniformity.
