Why isn't there "TO" ?

I have seen in many times people skip the word "to"
I need to know why ? Is this correct ?

ex:

These methods help us understand

instead of

These methods help us TO understand

The only other one I can think of offhand is know: I've never known him (to) do that before.

A: How did they do that?
B: They didn't dare (to) do anything else.

You have given two more examples. There are possibly a couple more. I wouldn't say that was 'legion'.

How many more do I have to give? The "to" is elided in parallel comparisons:

I'd prefer to pay rather than (to) argue.
Is it better to do good or (to) be good?

Or simple disjunctions or conjunctions:

It's not possible to come or (to) go.
I went to Las Vegas to play and (to) work.

After ought not (probably AmE):

You ought not (to) worry about th
