Why isn't the definite article used in ''get in back''?

I heard it from a movie and it means to get in the back of the vehicle and I'm just wondering why the definite article wasn't used at all.

Good question. I've repeated it both ways myself, and either seems to work.

To me, 'in back' is non -standard.

But 'in front' is OK. Emotion: smile
