Why is would missing?

I was told that this sentence is correct

She always said when she grew up she wanted to be a doctor.

However, I don't understand why WOULD is missing here, even though there is future in the past here. Is it because of WANT? It wouldn't be correct to say WOULD WANT TO BE

If we alter it to

She always said when she grew up she would be a doctor. (is it correct?) - Then WOULD sounds to in the right place doesn't it?

Could you analyze these sentenses taking into cosnsidiration my concern

Thank you
