Why is this sentence wrong?

Hi,

My student asked me why this sentence is incorrect:

I believe, that using the government's power ban dangerous sports is correct. This sentence requires 'to ban'. Can you explain why?

Top answer

I believe that using the government's power to ban dangerous sports is appropriate. 'Ban' is a verb; it is in its infinitive form, which requires the infinitive particle 'to' before the verb 'use'. This is true of many verb combinations: use (something) to do, plan to do, ask (someone) to do, want to do, beg to do, etc.

  • Other verbs accept the -ing form instead: keep doing, avoid doing, suggest doing.
  • Other verbs accept either (though the meaning sometimes changes): stop to do, stop doing; like to do, like doing .
