Why is this needed 'that'?

HI.

At following sentence, why the 'that' is used in?
I work in travel agency now. before 'that' i worked in a department store.

Sometime some sentence can hide the that and some sentence can't. But I'm not sure as to exactly usage about that.

And please let me know about above question.

"that" is a noun (or pronoun) referring to the thing just mentioned. I.e., "before that" means "before working in a travel agency".

But how about this? Can I use like this of the following sentences?

1.I work in a travel agency now. before I worked in a department store.
2.I work in a travel agency now. before, I worked in a department store.

2. I work in a travel agency now. Before, I worked in a department store.

(1) is a bit confusing to read. (2) is possible in a colloquial style. It is not very good for more formal writing.

The sentence with "that" is fine:

I work in a travel agency now. Before that, I worked in a department store.
