Why is there no article an or the before editor-in-chief in the sentence?

Most recently, I served for eight and a half years as editor-in-chief
of Chemical & Engineering News, the flagship newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society.

Hi, The lack of an article suggests that the writer is thinking of it as a job title. If so, it would be better to start with a capital 'E'. Clive

The lack of an article suggests that the writer is thinking of it as a job title. If so, it would be better to start with a capital 'E'.
