Why is there no "a" or "the" before the word "pilot" in the sentence?

Hi,

I read the sentence online and was wondering why there is no article "a" or "the" before the word "pilot" (the second one in bold in the sentence). Thanks in advance!

Bill Vanderkloot, an unassuming, studious American pilot, caught the attention of the Royal Air Force—

and became pilot to England’s most cherished leader in World War II.

Thanks,

Mary

Hi, The second 'pilot' is being used like a job title. The lack of an article suggests to us that the leader only had one pilot. Clive

Is "to" in "pilot to" correct? And should it be "...had caught..."? Thanks.
