Why is there a 'does' here?

I'm reading a web pages as following:

More mineral elements do not necessarily make the salt good for health. Arsenic, lead, aluminum, mercury and cadmium are mineral elements that are harmful for the body.

Sodium and phosphorus are needed, but our bodies already get the required dose through other diet sources and an excess can be harmful.

-----

If removing the word 'does', it seems that this sentence still is intact.

So, why is there a 'does' here? What does this 'does' do?
