Why is there a comma before "but"

"The finest dust did not settle back to earth
now, but disappeared into the darkening sky. "

There is no new subject, so strictly speaking, the comma is unnecessary. However, it does no harm, and may do some good, to leave it there.

Use the comma if you want to give the reader a very brief pause to consider and absorb the nicely written thought in the first part of the sentence.
