Why is there a comma before and?

God is our hope and strength, and help in trouble, ready to be found.

But we on the other side seek to God alone. We say with David, Psal. xlvi. 1. God is our hope and strength, and help in trouble, ready to be found.

I would use comma to mean that *** is always our hope and strength, and when we are in trouble, the source of help. Without the comma it would seem, perhaps, that he's our (hope, strength, and help) when we are in trouble, with the ( ) used as in math, to group them.
