why is the superlative of stress 'the most stressed"?

Hi everyone.

I was wondering if someone would be able to tell me why the superlative of stress is 'the most stressed' and not "the stressest".

Big = the biggest
Fat = the fattest
tall = the tallest
stress = the most stressed

All are only one syllable so why would the word stress be different.

Many thanks

  • Stress is not an adjective.
  • Stressed is the past participle form of the verb stress , and past participles have no comparative and superlative forms, so *stresseder and *stressedest are not possible, but more stressed and most stressed are.
