Why is the present perfect chosen?

In the 1:22 of the following cartoon, the professor says "...in that time, they've been squished, squashed, stomped, smushed, smashed and even stepped on." Could you tell me the reason why the present perfect was selected in the sentence? Does "they was squished..." sound odd in this context? Thanks in advance!
