Why is past continuous instead of simple past used in the since clause?

He sighed. “It has not been so long since you were playing in those pools. You used to ride the shoulders of an older girl . . . a tall girl with wispy yellow hair . . .” (A Feast for Crows)

Hi. I’d like to know why past continuous instead of simple past is used in the since clause? (Why not “since you played in those pools”?)
