Why is the hyphen(or dash?) needed in "sub-branch"?
That's what I've seen in most cases, as opposed to it being without a dash.

Sub as a separate word is short for submarine (the vessel or the sandwich).

As a prefix, meaning "lower ranking" or "under" it usually (not always) is written with a hyphen, unless a compound word has been accepted in the lexicon.
