Why is it 'my' instead of 'me'?

I encounter the following and have no understanding of why it's written in such a way:

"...he thought my catching the fish was exciting"

to me, it should be:

"...he thought me catching the fish was exciting"

Why is 'my' used instead of 'me'?

Catching is a gerund, the noun form of the verb; it takes a possessive [my / your / John's].
