Why is it called the American R?

Canadians use the same R sound. And other dialects of English use the same R sound as well. Why is it specifically called the American R?

Maybe because American English is the most spoken rhotic variety of English (words like "car, nurse, air, mister, etc." have an R sound).

Actually, Canada is in North America, so in that sense Canadians are Americans too.
