Why is it?

I saw from a post here that one of the following is correct and the other is not. Tell me why please.

(I am not asserting this statement personally though. I chose to use this to ask the question. )

Taiwan is part of China. (correct???)

Taiwan is part of China.

Taiwan is a part of China.

They are both correct. There's not much difference.

#1 suggests a bit more that China is very unified, very united.

#2 suggests a bit more that China consists of different, distinguishable parts.
