Why is "give an exchange" wrong?

(1) To guarantee customer satistaction, we always give our customers an exchange within six months of purchase. (give is WRONG).

(2) To guarantee customer satistaction, we always offer our customers an exchange within six months of purchase. (my friends' revision)

My non-native English speaking friends think "offer an exchange" is correct. I don't understand why "give an exchange" is wrong. Please explain that. Thank you.

Both sentences are missing the information that an exchange only applies when there is a fault with the product (I assume). I suppose this problem is a bit worse in (1), which reads as if an exchange always happens within six months (which I assume is not actually the case).
