Why infinitive not gerund

Dear Experts, could you please advise why the infinitive not gerund is used after the verb remember in the following sentence?

I remembered to ask for a room as far away from the lifts as possible and they found me a nice comfortable one on the second floor. ( a girl is writing a letter to her parents)

The meanings are different.

I remembered to do it. (I didn't forget to do it.)

I remembered doing it. (I remembered the fact that I had done it.)
