Why "I" should be written with capital letter?

Dear friends,

Does anybody know why the word "I" should be written with capital letter?

However, my tounge language does the contrary. Instead of "I" in capital letter, we write "You" in capital letter.

Please help me.
It's a bit confusing.
Thanks. Emotion: smile

Margareth, there is no "why" that I can tell you, except that it's such a tiny little letter that perhaps without being a capital it would get lost. I'm sure if you google it, you'll find explanations. For now, just realize that it just is that way.

Skt. aham, Hitt. uk, L. ego, Gk. ego, Rus. ja). Reduced to i by 1137 in northern England, it began to be capitalized c.1250 to mark it as a distinct word and avoid misreading in

Ok. I'm just wondering why.
I agree with you, it would be lost without capital letters.
However, my native language is Indonesia.
We write "You" in capital letter. I've asked someone opinion about it. He said that because we Indonesian has a tradition to respect or prioritize other people than ourselves, even in writing.

i've seen the reason for i being capitalised because of it otherwise being missed out...so why don't the Italians do the same where the letter "i" means "the" in plural form...just immagine what a huge confusion if that "i" was lost. Maybe they have better eye-sight
