Why i aspire a career in medicine

I am shaken awake early on a Saturday morning and by the piercing screams and loud footsteps coming from the living room, I knew it was going to be another intriguing day. I peeped through the curtain and as usual, the smell of blood filled my nose, rapidly I brush my teeth and put on my gloves, and I’m ready to be the helper of the day. In between sowing stitches and rendering soothing advice my mother shouts out to me what I need to be doing. This time the patients were victims of a fatal automobile accident. My seven years old body trembles at the sight of broken bones and unconscious patients and something tells me to run from the pungent smell but a bigger and better passion of compassion hooked me down and forced me to wrap a bandage around the next broken arm and offer water to calm down the next panting family member.

Growing up in a third world country and having a mother as a nurse is exactly what brought about these experiences I had as a childhood. With very limited hospital aid, poverty and lack of transportation, my living room was often turned to the emergency room and primary care unit for residents of my town and my mother being the angel she is never turned down a patient regardless of the situation. As hectic as the day got sometimes, I never failed to find the phenomena of medicine interesting and the rapid improve in health of these patients greatly intrigued me. Although more often than not, the price for the care of these patients was nothing, seeing a smile on their faces afterwards always seemed to be the greatest reward for me. The decision to gain a career as a medical doctor came to me as naturally as possible as I saw rendering a helping hand of compassion to people as a part of my life and a situation I've always been exposed to.
I want to go into medicine because I am utterly fascinated by science aspect of the healthcare field, and all of the potential innovations and advancements to be made, however I want to be a medical doctor because I want to reach out to people and continue to do what I was raised to do. Although I am now in a first world country and no longer have to deal with the smell of blood lingering in my living room, I have devoted my time to volunteering extensively in local hospitals whenever the time permits. I am also increasing my knowledge of the “why” aspect of medicine by reading extensively and being a Biology and potential Chemistry major.
My personality has also had a major influence in my career aspirations. I describe myself as very inquisitive and I believe a career in medicine will effectively satisfy my impairing curiosity. I am a self-motivated, determined individual and a hard worker, the challenges associated with being a doctor is something I actually look forward to. I also have the desire to help change the health care system in my country and I plan on initiating this change by starting my own hospital that will be absolutely free and accessible. I am aware of the demands of a medical career but my commitment and desire to become a doctor has only been strengthened through my experience and work in a voluntary capacity. I believe that getting this scholarship will help tremendously in fulfilling my dreams and achieving my goal.
