Why don't we use the same preposition or position word 'ON' for all vehicles ??

let me illustrate here ....
1. We are sitting *on* a bus.
2. We are sitting *on* a plane.
3. We are siiting *on* a boat.
4. We are sitting *on* a subway.
5. We are sitting *in* a car or cab.

In sentence # 5, just for the vehicle car, we used the preposition *in* , why ??
Regards!! Emotion: smile

Hi,
A teacher told this:
We use the preposition 'on' for public transport.
We use the preposition 'in' for private transport.

Let's see what the others have to say.

but personally , I think that ...
'in' prefers to something that is an inclose the area
'on' prefers to something that is horizontal and vertical on some flat surface..
what do you think about my understanding ??
