Why does "I" come last?

Why does "I" come last in the sequence?

For example:

My wife and I went shopping.

My sister, my brother, my two cousins and I went rollerskating.

Does anyone know the answer?

Thanks

Those sentences sound better to me with "I" last. That may be because we are taught that "I" should be last because it's more polite that way.

I can't think of any logical answer other than what you have offered. Many languages do the same thing.
