Why does Col. Fitts kill Lester in American Beauty?

This is an excerpt from the plot summary of American Beauty:

At the same time, Lester is quietly approached in his garage while working out by a distraught Col. Fitts, who has been out in the rain. Lester attempts to comfort Col. Fitts who kisses him, believing him to be a homosexual based on what he had seen earlier. Despite his homophobia, Fitts is revealed to be a closeted gay man. Lester rejects this advance calmly as a misunderstanding, and Fitts leaves, humiliated. (Wikipedia)

There was no reason for Fitts to kill Lester after knowing that Lester was not a gay and he had no sexual relation with his son, Ricky.

Hey again. Nope -- I'm Japanese.

You are right, Jackson! It's such a quiet, peaceful death, I didn't even notice... let alone wonder why Fitts has to kill Lester. Just a wild guess -- to prove his manliness to himself..?? He's collected the gun for the same reason, perhaps... ? How do you think?

Oh, it was just a wild guess. If I remember correctly, Fitts has been the epitome of rigor, sternness. ... umm, so what, you may ask, but I don't know...! (sorry)

I hope other members give their thoughts.

Well, I try, but mind you, I feel I am not the right person to ask this kind of question. I would rather that you'd be more specific about your interest...

Anyway, Fitts, the epitome of manline
