Why does a comma applied in the middle of the above sentence?

Can I put a period in the middle instead of a comma?

I don't have a big problem with that comma, especially in dialogue, but many people would. The period is correct, but an em dash is better: "Never mind your own interest—how's the next fellow getting along?"
