"why do/does everyone and everything matter"?

Hello,

Should we say "why do everyone and everything" or "why does everyone and everything"?

I'm leaning towards "do" because it is a compound subject, thus plural. But maybe it is a sylepsis, "why does everyone and [why] does everything matter"...

What about similar sentences? --> how is/are... what is/are... who is/are...

So do we use a plural verb or a singular for "what is/are a proton and an electron" ?

surely they follow the same structure?

Thank you very much.
