Why do we write 'profits' instead of 'profit'??

Could someone help me with this one please???

E.g. A fall/ a drop/ a rise/ an increase in profits.
Why can't we just write profit, like e.g. we don't write: net 'profits' was up to 16%.

Another example: Profit from exports rose 7.3%.
Why don't they use 'profits' here???

Thnx in advance!!!

You can use either the singular or the plural; businesspersons do. Obviously, a large company can consider the various profits (and losses) they sustain from a number of products or services. When a phrase like 'from exports' occurs, it limits the area of consideration, and the speaker may consider it a single profit figure.
