Why do we use that structure in the following sentence ?

Hello everyone Emotion: smile

the sentence is :

I am lucky to be reading this book, otherwise I will go mad.

I wonder why we don't just say to read.

And what is the diferent in the transation if the both are possible.

Hello, Max! Here you can use both constructions. Since it's in the present tense, maybe it's better to use the -ing form (lucky to be reading), it implies you are actually reading it as you express your feeling of being lucky.

I am lucky to be reading this book, otherwise I will go mad.
In English we would say "I am lucky to be reading this book, otherwise I would go mad."

Hmm, strange that the quote looks fine in preview mode but produces garbage when I click Post!

QUOTE: "I am lucky to be reading this book, otherwise I will go mad.

In English we would say "I am lucky to be reading this book, otherwise I would go mad."

Yes, in this instance it sounds much better indeed. But you can say "I'm lucky to have you as a friend".
